Anglesey business hits right notes with A&B Cymru nomination

May 23 2012

Home improvements company Peninsula is in the running for a prestigious Arts and Business Cymru Award.

The Gaerwen-based firm was nominated for its support of last year's inaugural Summer Night Jazz festival at Plas Newydd on Anglesey.

Their £2,800 sponsorship package included an £800 contribution - match funded by A&B Cymru - towards a bursary scheme for young musicians.

The idea of the bursary, run in conjunction with the William Mathias Music Centre in Caernarfon, is to provide youngsters with access to expert tuition they might otherwise have not been able to afford.

Lorraine Hopkins, partner of Peninsula's managing director Ken Grayson, is a former North Wales manager of A&B.

The mum-of-two is now a full-time co-director - but her commitment to the arts still burns bright.

Lorraine said: “The company, which employs 22 people, traditionally sold uPVC windows and doors but over the past five years we have diversified the product range to include solar panels, balustrading, garage doors and the like - it's very much about aluminium and composite products.

“We’ve really embraced the arts within Peninsula now because it really helps us with our positioning as it’s such a competitive industry and one that doesn't have the best reputation really.

“We have an excellent reputation that is far removed from the stereotype perpetuated by some cowboy operators - so we use that as our strength because we position ourselves in a different league altogether.”

She added: “Buying into the arts gives us that kind of edge so it’s about being associated with creativity and being forward thinking.”

Lorraine is looking forward to the event, to be held in Cardiff on June 14, and hopes they will emerge victorious.

“We've been nominated a few times before and we're thrilled to be finalists this year. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed,” she added.

I should like you to know that my wife and I are eminently satisfied with the patio door that you supplied and fitted last month.
